Description

The RIVER 3 Max Plus Wireless is a set of two units that stack on each other: a 286 Wh RIVER 3 Plus Wireless station and a 572 Wh RIVER 3 Plus EB600 extra battery. Together that is 858 Wh, the maximum this station supports. On top, in the lid niche, sits a removable 5000 mAh RAPID power bank with Qi2 wireless charging.

If you are planning to buy an EcoFlow RIVER 3 Max Plus Wireless for an apartment, the main question is how many hours of outage to plan for. A threefold reserve compared with one station lets you get through an evening and night without power with a router, laptop, lamps and even a small fridge, while the phone charges right on the lid.

What is in the set and what makes it special

The official name of the set on EcoFlow’s site is RIVER 3 Max Plus (Wireless), that is, a RIVER 3 Plus (Wireless) together with an Extra Battery 600. Both units connect through pogo pin contacts and are fixed with latches, and no cables are needed between them.

  • a RIVER 3 Plus Wireless station: 286 Wh, 600 W, three Schuko outlets, 100 W USB-C;
  • an EB600 battery: 572 Wh, its own 140 W USB-C port for charging and power, 234 × 224 × 158 mm, about 5.8 kg;
  • a 180 g magnetic RAPID power bank of 5000 mAh that charges a phone wirelessly (up to 15 W) or through its own cable;
  • the box also contains a mains cord, a USB cable for connecting the station to a PC and documents.

From the regular EcoFlow RIVER 3 Max Plus this set differs only in the station: here it is the Wireless version, with a niche for the power bank on the lid, and the power bank itself lies in the box. The capacity, the EB600 battery and the ports are the same.

Advantages of the RIVER 3 Max Plus Wireless

858 Wh in two light units

Instead of one heavy station, two modules of roughly 5–6 kg each. Each can be carried out separately, and at home put as a tower on a 23 × 23 cm footprint. For those living on a floor without a lift this is a noticeable difference.

The battery works separately too

The EB600 detaches from the station and becomes a large power bank with a 140 W USB-C. A laptop or tablet can be charged from it in another room while the station with the RAPID power bank powers the router. Through the same port the battery can be topped up from a USB-C charger.

Three levels of autonomy

The 858 Wh tower stands at home, the 5000 mAh RAPID goes with you in your pocket, and the EB600 can be taken to a country house or a car. Each unit has its own USB-C output, so energy is easy to share between people.

Uninterruptible power for a home office

A PC with a monitor works through the station all the time: switching to battery when the mains disappears, according to EcoFlow, takes under 10 ms. Through the USB-B port the PC or NAS receives power status data. With 858 Wh a 600 W desktop PC, per EcoFlow’s tests, runs for about an hour.

Quiet and maintenance-free

The LiFePO4 batteries in the station and in the EB600 are rated for 3000 cycles to 80% capacity. The station’s noise does not exceed 30 dB, so the tower can be kept in a room where people sleep.

How long 858 Wh lasts

Below is the run time of the set in EcoFlow’s lab tests. The figures for a specific device will differ, so treat them as a guide.

DevicePowerRun time
Travel router10 W61.1 h
Drone (charging)40 W17.4 h
Car fridge60 W11.7 h
Game console100 W6.7 h
Fridge120 W5.6 h
Desktop PC600 W1 h

For devices not in the table, calculate like this: about 730 Wh of usable energy (85% of 858) divided by consumption. An optical terminal with a 20 W router is over a day and a half, an 80 W TV together with a lamp about 8 hours. A modern fridge that switches on in cycles and on average takes 50–60 W will last 12–14 hours. All of this is an estimate.

A few scenarios with calculations

  • a 4-hour scheduled outage: a fridge at 50 W on average, router 20 W, TV 80 W and lights 20 W — 170 W in total, about 680 Wh, that is almost the whole reserve;
  • a 10-hour night without power: only a router, a lamp and phone charging (up to 40 W) — about 400 Wh, you will meet the morning with half a charge;
  • a working day at home: laptop 60 W, monitor 25 W and router 15 W — 100 W, about 7 hours of work.

All the figures are an estimate by the formula “usable energy divided by power”, without taking starting currents and battery ageing into account.

The limit of the set is power, not capacity: the outlets deliver 600 W, and heaters in X-Boost mode up to 1200 W at reduced output. An electric cooker, boiler or 2 kW heater are not suitable for this set.

How to charge and maintain the set

From the mains the station with the battery attached, per the manual, accepts up to 650 W, the station itself up to 360–380 W. There is one solar input, up to 220 W at 11–55 V, an XT60i connector; the panel and an MC4 to XT60i cable are bought separately. From the sun 858 Wh fills noticeably more slowly than a single station, so for a country house it is better to have access to both the mains and a panel.

A simple calculation for the sun: 858 Wh divided by the maximum 220 W is at least 4 hours of ideal generation. In reality with a single 220 W panel on a clear summer day only part of the capacity is gained, so it is sensible to fill the set from the mains and use the sun to maintain the charge at a country house or on a hike. The input voltage must not exceed 55 V.

In UPS mode the set is plugged into the mains and the equipment into the station’s outlets. The USB-B to USB-A cable from the box connects the station to a PC or NAS, and the computer sees it as an uninterruptible power source. For a night reserve of a 30–40 W NAS, 858 Wh is enough for several outages in a row if there is mains power between them to recharge.

The battery must be switched off together with the station before connecting or disconnecting: the manual requires this. After installation a battery icon and its charge level appear on the station’s display, and in the EcoFlow app over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth you can see the charge of both units and the power bank.

The RAPID power bank, while it sits in the niche, is powered from the station through 12 V contacts. A phone or earbuds with wireless charging can be left on it. EcoFlow’s warranty is 5 years on the station and 2 years on the power bank.

The EcoFlow RIVER 3 Max Plus has the same energy reserve without the niche and power bank on the lid. Choose it if you do not need wireless charging.

The EcoFlow RIVER 3 Max consists of a RIVER 3 Plus and an EB300 battery, 572 Wh together. It is lighter, but for a night outage with a fridge the capacity may no longer be enough.

You can go gradually: take an EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus Wireless and later buy separately an EB600 or an EB300 battery. For short trips without expansion there is the compact 245 Wh RIVER 3.

Who the set suits and who it does not

It will suit you if:

  • you need a reserve for a 6–12 hour outage for a router, laptop, lamps and TV;
  • you want a full phone power bank every morning;
  • it is important to carry the energy in parts rather than one heavy station;
  • there is a PC or NAS at home that needs uninterruptible power.

It will not suit you if:

  • your equipment consumes over 600 W continuously, for example a 2 kW electric kettle;
  • you need fast charging from several solar panels at once;
  • you count on a day of a gas boiler with a pump and a fridge together — then look at the DELTA series.

FAQ

What is the total capacity of the set?

858 Wh: 286 Wh in the station and 572 Wh in the EB600 battery. No more can be attached to the RIVER 3 Plus Wireless; there can be only one battery under the station.

How much does the set weigh?

About 11 kg together. According to EcoFlow’s manuals the Wireless station weighs about 5.2 kg, the EB600 battery about 5.8 kg and the power bank 180 g. You can carry one unit at a time.

Does the EB600 work as a separate power bank?

Yes. It has its own 140 W USB-C port for power and charging, so a laptop, phone or tablet can be charged directly. The battery has no 230 V outlets; they are only on the station.

How is this set better than a Wireless station and a separate battery?

In composition it is the same: a Wireless station plus an EB600. The difference is only that everything comes as one set and the battery is already matched to the maximum capacity.

Does the power bank charge phones without Qi2?

Yes, if the phone supports Qi wireless charging, but the speed will be lower than 15 W. For phones without wireless charging the power bank has a built-in USB-C cable of up to 30 W.

Can the RAPID power bank be taken with you?

Yes, it detaches from the niche and works separately: it charges a phone with a magnetic mount wirelessly at up to 15 W or through the built-in USB-C cable at up to 30 W. Put back in the niche, it tops up from the station while the latter is on.

How long does the set take to charge from the sun?

EcoFlow does not state a time for the set. Since there is one solar input, up to 220 W, even in ideal conditions 858 Wh will take over 4 hours, and in real weather more. This is an estimate.

Can the set be left plugged into the mains permanently?

Yes, that is exactly how UPS mode works: equipment is powered through the station, and it maintains the charge from the mains. The optimal room temperature for operation is 20–30 °C.
